CA1 Practice Paper

Dear Parents,

I have returned the marked Paper 1, Bkts A and B, to the girls today. Here are some points to note:
1) Time Management - some could not complete the paper in 50 minutes, spending too much time on each question. I have advised them to move on should they find themselves stuck on one for too long. They need to work fast with accuracy. It is important to know their times table at their finger tips too!

2) Revision of P4 work - some totally missed out on decimal questions forgetting that this topic had been taught last year in semester 2. This topic can be found in their 4B CB and AB. All P4 concepts can be tested in the coming CA1.

3) Unnecessary conversion - I have highlighted to them that conversion of units (eg hour to min, km to m etc) is not required for fraction questions unless instructed in question. It's neater to work with fractions. For example, in question 2, shown below, please do not change 1.5 hr to 90 minutes and so on. This is also to minimise errors made during conversion.

Just a reminder for the girls:1. For Booklet A (MCQ), it is a good habit to do your workings on the paper so that you can refer to them when you are checking your answers.
2. For Booklet B and Paper 2 (Short answer questions), you must write number sentences. Workings alone are not sufficient. Why do you need to write the number sentences? If you do not, I will not be able to award you with method marks if your answers are wrong.
3. For Paper 2 (problem sums), you must write number sentences with proper final statements. (That is, you are not allowed to write 'Ans: ______' as your word statement.)
Please note that Paper 2 for this CA1 practice has been set as Homework for today. I have told the girls to work within the allocated time, 1 h 40 min. It will be good if they can be disciplined and sit through the paper on their own. Please allow them to self check the paper instead of spotting their errors. I will appreciate if they can bring the paper back tomorrow for me to mark and give feedback.

Admin Matters
1) Parents who are still keen to sign up for the Parents' Seminar on Strategies to help Students in PSLE Mathematics on 9 March, you may still do so. Return the form through your child tomorrow.

2) Please return ALL donation cards tomorrow 28 Feb 2013.

Thank you for your kind attention and support.

Review 1: Commom errors

Dear Parents,

Below are examples of 2 common errors seen in Review 1:

Common error 1

Pupils change fractions to like fractions for product of fractions. They were confused with addition and subtraction of fractions. For product of fractions, simply multipy across horizontally, ie, numerator with numerator and denominator with denomintor.

Common error 2

Wrong presentation.
It is mathematically wrong to write 72 ÷ (9-8)÷4  = 72 ÷ 1
It is important that their number statements make sense.

Below is an example of how the answer should be presented:

I will be going through Review 1 before I return them to the girls tomorrow.
Thank you for your kind attention.

2. CA1 Coverage for P5 topics
To further streamline the P5 topics for Math revision, the girls will be tested up to Product of fractions/improper fractions only. The rest of the subtopics in fractions will be covered after CA1 (according to the Math scheme of work).

3. Parents' Seminar on Strategies to help students in PSLE Mathematics
There will be a seminar for parents on the above on 9 March 2013 (Sat), 1030-1230, conducted by Mr Erest Wong, held in our school.
For more information, please refer to the letter and reply slip that were given out to the girls this morning.

Math Updates and HW 19/2

Math Homework 19/2

Review 1
Pg 87-90

Dear Parents,

We have started on Product of Fractions yesterday and the "cancellation method" is highly encouraged. This is because simplifying before multiplying the numbers enables them to work with smaller numbers. Most of the girls are able to grasp the concept well.

Please continue to do more practices with them at home and ensure that they know their multiplication tables well :)

Cheers,
Mrs Janet Chua
