Class Admin Matters
Dear Parents,
The following have been distributed to the girls today:
1) "A Gift from the Heart" Project
A donation card has been given out to each child today. As most of you are aware, the school has managed to install air-conditioners in our school hall and the girls have benefitted much from this. The total cost of this project is S$200 000 and we currently still need your help to raise the balance of S$70 000.
I have spoken to the girls and have told them to do their collection during the festive season and long weekend while everyone will be most generous :) Please assist in reminding them to do so.
I am sure we can do our best to raise as much as we can! Not forgetting that these girls will certianly benefit next year when they sit for their PSLE in a comfortable air-conditioned hall :)
2) Math Olympiad Training
A letter to parents on the above programme has been distributed today through the girls. This training is not compulsory. If you are interested in signing your child up, kindly return the completed registration form and edusave form/cash/cheque to me by 1 Feb 2013.
Thank you.
Cheers,
Mrs J Chua

I-GIVE - Overseas Learning Programme
Dear parents,
after a long anticipation, your child has finally received the information for the Overseas Learning Journey (OLJ) organised by our school for the year 2013. Do look through the exciting journeys our school has planned for your child, and take careful consideration when making the 1st and 2nd choices. I would strongly encourage you and your spouse to have a serious discussion with your child before putting down her choices in the reply slip.
Please be reminded NOT to tick the boxes but to indicate the choices with "1" for for first choice and "2" for second choice. If you do not wish to let your child go on any of the OLJ, kindly indicate on the reply slip.
All reply slips have to be returned to me by 29th January 2013 (Tuesday).
Thanks!
Cheers,
Ms Vivian Ong

Math AB returned
Dear Parents,
The Math AB have been returned to the girls to bring home for your perusal.
We have covered up to Activity 2.1 ~ Orders of Operations.
A handful of girls have not fully grasp the basic concept well and need more practice. I revisited the concept and cleared some misconceptions with the girls in class today.
The girls have to complete their corrections (if any) for Act 2.1 at home.
It's NO HOMEWORK THURSDAY :)

Math Matters and HW
Math Homework 23/1
Whole Nos WS (Enrichment) |
Dear Parents,
Please note that WS (Enrichment) are additional worksheets that are given to the class by me, over and above the school worksheets. These "more challenging " WS are meant to stretch the girls further. They are certianly NOT optional WS.
I have emphasised 3 Habits of Mind for Math, for them to cultivate, from the start of the term and they are:
Perseverance - "I got try and try again through difficulty and challenges"
Flexible thinking - "Can I solve this with a different/easier approach?"
Strive for Accuracy - "Have I checked my sums?" "Did I write proper number statements?" "Are my steps logical?"
I constantly remind the girls in class (like a broken record) and I seek your help to reinforce these 3 habits at home too :).
Lately, I have feedback from other subject teachers that some of the girls have problems bringing their assignments/HW back to school. Kindly remind them to complete their HW and to pack their school bags before they go to bed and if possible, do a "spot check" on them occasionally so that they know that we care. I know that they are already in P5 and are suppose to be more independent but, children being children, they still have the playful and carefree side of them :)
Lastly, I had distributed a sample of the Math Addventure magazine and the subscription form to the girls. I have found this magazine to be quite informative and Math magazine are really very RARE (hahaha)! If you are interested to subscribe this for your child, kindly return the subscription form with the cash/cheque to me no later than Friday 25/1.
Have a great day!
Cheers,
Mrs Janet Chua

Math Lesson Update
Dear Parents,
We started on Order of Operations today.
These are the steps that I have asked them to follow when solving Qns involving order of operations:
Eg: 8 x 7 - 2 x 3
Step 1
Look out for
x and/or ÷ (solve from left to right) then + and/or - (solve from left to right)
Step 2
*Underline the operation that is being carried out, then copy the rest of the question down.
Replace the answer with the underlined operation, in the next step.
Repeat this step until the entire qn is solved.
Solution:
8 x 7 - 2 x 3 = 56 - 2 x 3
= 56 - 6
= 50
Kindly use this mtd with your child too to minimise confusion.

A warm welcome and some updates
Dear parents/guardian,
Greetings! My name is Ms Vivian Ong and I am the form teacher of 5 Faith for the upcoming academic year (2013). Over the course of the upcoming year, I will be conducting Art lesson and Form Teacher Guidance Period (FTGP) with your child.
As we embark on this new academic year of your child's education, it seems appropriate that I take this opportunity to update you on the current progress of the class.
Over the course of the past week, your child and her classmates have engaged in discussions to lay down a set of class rules which they will conform to for the year 2013. Personally, I feel that this activity is important as it allows pupils to be responsible for their own learning and development. I hope that this set of class rules would serve as a platform so as to enable these young ladies to achieve a greater success in their learning. Keeping in mind our school vision -- “A CHIJ OLQP pupil is a confident young LADY who has moral character and genuine love for LEARNING, LEADING and serving GOD and others” in short “LEARNER, LEADER, LADY”, the class rules were drafted with these ideologies as a guideline and in this letter, I would like to share with you the class rules drafted by the ladies of class 5 Faith:
LEARNER
– Listen, help and be patient with one another
– Work together to keep the classroom clean at all times.
LEADER
– Be a positive influence to one another
– Build on strengths, overcome weaknesses
LADY
– Speak, sit and behave like a lady
– Treat everyone with respect
You may also wish to encourage your child to practice these at home.
A gentle reminder, with regards to absence from school, it would be appreciated if you could email me on your child’s absence whenever possible. This would help me ensure that I would be aware of the whereabouts of your child. Kindly also remind your child to submit a letter or Medical Certificate upon her return on the next school day. If there is a need for your child to be excused from school (i.e. piano examination), please present a letter (leave of absence) in advance so that the necessary administrative actions can be taken.
Next, I would like to inform you on the contact details of your child’s subject teachers.

Math Homework 9/1
AB 1.3 |
Dear Parents,
Please do not ask your child to do more exercises than what they were assigned to so in the AB. A handful of pupils had many errors in their work and they revealed that they did the work in advance at home before the topic was taught.
I seek your understanding on this matter. If you would like your child to have more practice, you may purchase another AB for her to do at home.

Mrs J Chua

Feedback on Marked AB 1.1 and HW 8/1
Math Homework 8/1
CB Pg 8 |
Dear Parents,
The following are common errors that I observed while marking the girls' 1st assigned work, AB 1.1:
1) Spelling error for numbers like '90', '14', '15' and '40'. They tend to spell it as "Ninty" instead of "Ninety","forteen" instead of "Fourteen", "Fiveteen" instead of "Fifteen" and "Fourty" instead of "Forty"
2) Write the given number, 587 123 in words, here are some common mistakes,
Five hundred and eighty(-)seven thousand, one hundred and twenty(-)three.
Five hundred (and) eighty-seven thousand, one hundred and twenty-three.
FIve hundred and eighty-seven thousand(,) one hundred and twenty-three.
Five hundred and eighty-seven (thousand), one hundred and twenty-three.
Answer: Five hundred and eighty-seven thousand, one hundred and twenty-three.
The words/symbols highlighted in brackets are commonly missing.
I have highlighted the above to the girls in class today and will be returning the books to them to bring home tomorrow.
Please note that I will not be writing the correct answers for them in their exercise. This is deliberate on my part as I would like to train them to correct their work independently. I would like the children to spot the errors themselves to find out "where" they had gone wrong. I hope you agree wth me in this "training" and practise with your child as well. Try not to "spot" errors for your child. Allow them to learn how to spot their own mistakes.
Cheers,
Mrs J Chua

A Warm Hello from Mrs Janet Chua
Dear Parents,
Greetings! I am Mrs Janet Chua, your child’s Math and Co-Form Teacher.
I will like to foster a better parent-teacher communication
with you, keeping you in the know of your child’s progress in
class through our Class blog: http://olqp5f2013.blogspot.com/
Many years as an educator have taught me that communication between parents and school staff is very important. Please feel free to provide me with feedback/raise any concerns, as a strong partnership will help to stretch the potential of my pupils and to look into their social and emotional development, bringing out the best in them. Please feel free to drop me an email at mrsjchua@yahoo.com on matters pertaining to Math.
I will also appreciate if you can complete the contact form and return it to me by 7 January 2013.
I will share with the class on my expectation of them to work together to enjoy, learn and succeed. There will be rules and routines for them to follow so that everyone helps to create a better learning environment. Pupils are expected to complete the homework and assignments to the best of their abilities. I expect them to be punctual in their work submission and to be neat. The consequences of non-conformity will be discussed and agreed with the class, so please do work hand in hand with me. Good habits formed at young age, it will definitely benefit them in the long run.
I’ll be posting class information and homework on the class blog whenever there is a need. However, the Student's Diary is the first line of communication. I prefer pupils to be responsible of their own learning, to explain to parents what went on in class instead of referring parents to read the blog. The class blog info is mainly to keep you abreast of the homework and for you to 'confirm' any with your child. This is to eradicate any chances of the child (not having done his/her homework) blaming his/her parents.
Looking forward to working closely with you for the good of your child in 2013!
Warmest Regards,
Mrs Janet Chua
